If you’re preparing to join the military, one of your first major steps is going through MEPS—Military Entrance Processing Station. It’s a big deal, but you don’t need to panic. This guide will walk you through exactly what happens at MEPS, what to bring, what to expect, and how to be ready—mentally and physically.
What Is MEPS and Why Does It Matter?
MEPS is where you’ll be medically, mentally, and physically evaluated to ensure you’re qualified to serve in the military. Whether you’re joining the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Space Force—MEPS is your entry point.
While the exact order of events can vary by location, every MEPS station follows the same general process and checks the same key requirements.
The Day Before MEPS
Most recruits are taken to MEPS the day before their processing begins. Your recruiter will either drive you or arrange transportation. Regardless of whether MEPS is in your city or another one, you’ll usually stay in a nearby hotel overnight.
- You’ll likely share a room with a same-sex roommate.
- You’ll be expected to dress professionally the next day—no ripped jeans, tank tops, or flip-flops.
- Your recruiter should tell you the dress code in advance (think: slacks and a tucked-in shirt).
MEPS Begins Early—Be Ready
Expect to wake up early. The day starts with check-in and a briefing, followed by a long sequence of stations you’ll move through. Here’s what’s typically involved:
Core MEPS Stations to Expect
1. ASVAB or Verification Test
- If you haven’t taken the ASVAB yet, you’ll do it here.
- If you took the PiCAT, you’ll do a verification test to confirm your score.
2. Medical History Review
- Your records will be reviewed.
- They’ll verify past diagnoses and treatment history.
- Be honest—they can access your medical records.
3. Vision and Hearing Tests
- Colorblindness and poor hearing can limit your job options.
- You’ll do a hearing test in a soundproof booth—this one’s tough, even for veterans.
4. Height & Weight Check
- You must meet specific standards based on age and height.
- Too heavy or too light? You may be told to lose/gain weight before continuing.
5. Physical Abilities Screening
- Includes things like joint flexibility, balance, and the infamous duck walk.
- Usually done in your underwear in a group setting (yep, it’s awkward).
6. Urine and Blood Tests
- Urinalysis screens for drugs (and pregnancy if you’re female).
- Blood draws check for health conditions or disqualifying illnesses.
What Happens After Testing?
Once you’ve completed all the testing stations and pass the evaluations, you’ll sit down with a counselor to discuss:
- Your ASVAB results
- Your eligible job options
- What’s available right now in terms of openings
- If everything aligns, you’ll sign your enlistment contract
Time to Take the Oath
You’ll join other recruits from all branches to take the oath of enlistment. You’ll raise your right hand, repeat after the officer, and officially commit to military service.
🎖️ While this moment is symbolic, you’re not fully “in” until day one of basic training.
You may be allowed to invite a parent or spouse to watch and take photos during the oath ceremony—it’s a proud milestone moment.
